A Chandpur court today (12 July) sent an accused to jail following his confession to the attempted murder of a mosque khatib yesterday.

The accused Billal Hossain, a vegetable vendor in Bishnupur Union, was produced before Judicial Magistrate Shahadatul Hasan Al Murad's court, where he gave a confessional statement. The court later ordered his imprisonment.

Government prosecutors Abdul Qader Khan, from the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal, and Yasin Arafat Ikram, from the District Judge's Court confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

Court Inspector Shaidullah said, "Billal was brought to court around 3pm and was taken into custody. Chandpur Model Police Station Sub-inspector Nazmul Hossain is the investigating officer for the case."

According to police, Billal attacked the khatib with a machete, inflicting serious head and ear injuries. Worshippers present at the scene detained Billal and handed him over to the Chandpur police.

The attack, which took place inside a mosque in Chandpur's Professor Para area yesterday, shortly after Jummah prayers, was reportedly triggered by religious comments allegedly made by the victim Maulana ANM Nurur Rahman Madani.

Following the attack, the khatib's son, Afnan Taki, filed a case with the police station.

Amid the tensions, rumours spread on social media claiming that the injured khatib had passed away.

However, dismissing the misinformation, Afnan Taki told TBS, "My father was first treated at Chandpur General Hospital and later taken to Holy Care Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment. He is now recovering and out of danger."

In response to the incident, Chandpur's Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib convened a meeting at 3pm today with leaders of various political and religious groups to maintain communal harmony.

Later in the day, at 5pm, members of Jamaat-e-Islami's Chandpur town unit held a protest rally from the Baitul Amin Railway Jame Masjid, condemning the attack and demanding justice.
