A National University student was killed in a knife attack allegedly by muggers in Gazipur's Tongi early today (10 July).

Deceased Md Mahfuzur Rahman, 22, from Hayatshar village in Barishal sadar upazila, was an honours first year student at Government Syed Hatem Ali College, Barishal, under the National University. 

According to police, Mahfuzur was intercepted by unidentified muggers on a flyover near Sena Kalyan Bhaban in Tongi Bazar around 1am. As he resisted mugging, they stabbed him indiscriminately.

Hearing his screams, on-duty police members in the area rushed to the scene and rescued him with stab wounds.

He was rushed to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi where the on-duty physicians pronounced him dead. 

Tongi West police station Sub-Inspector Mozammel Haque said the body has been sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

A bag was recovered from the deceased's possession, he added.

Tongi West police station OC Eskander Habibur Rahman said a murder case will be filed in connection with the incident.

"Police teams are working to identify and arrest the muggers. Police patrolling have been strengthened in the area," added the OC.
