Md Jahangir Kabir takes charge as Additional Inspector General of Prisons

Md Jahangir Kabir has been promoted to the position of Additional Inspector General of Prisons at the Department of Prisons Headquarters. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the official notification of his promotion on Monday, signed by Deputy Secretary Md. Hafiz-Al-Asad, following the recommendation of the departmental promotion committee.
Previously serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons for the Dhaka Division since August 18, 2024, Md. Jahangir Kabir has also held the role of DIG of Prisons in the Mymensingh and Barisal divisions.
His career in the prison service began in 2008 as Jail Superintendent at Munshiganj District Jail. He was promoted to Senior Jail Superintendent in 2013 and has served successfully in key roles at major facilities including Kashimpur Central Jail-1, Comilla Central Jail, Kashimpur Central Jail-2, Chattogram Central Jail, Dhaka Central Jail, and Mymensingh Central Jail. He has also served as Additional Inspector General (Development) at Prisons Headquarters.
In December 2019, he advanced to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and was transferred to the Barisal Division in January 2023.
Md. Jahangir Kabir was born on 24 December 1976 in Bazar Gopalpur village, Madhuhati Union, Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. He hails from a respected family; his father, Haji Md. Abu Zafar, is a prominent figure in the community, and his late mother was Laila Begum. He is the third of five brothers. He is married to Naznin Nahar, and the couple has two sons, Rad Sharar and Rad Shahamat.
He completed his secondary education at Bazar Gopalpur Secondary School, followed by HSC from Dhaka College. He holds both Bachelor's (Honours) and Master's degrees in Sociology from the University of Dhaka.
