Bangladesh suffer humiliating innings defeat in Colombo

Bangladesh succumbed to a humiliating innings and 78-run defeat on Day 4 of their second and final Test against hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo today. The victory saw Sri Lanka clinch the two-match series 1-0, after the first Test in Galle ended in a draw last week.

This is Bangladesh's 47th innings defeat in 155 Tests, with Sri Lanka now responsible for nine of those – joining South Africa at the top of the list for inflicting the most innings defeats on Bangladesh. The only other team Sri Lanka have beaten by an innings more often is Zimbabwe, who have suffered such a fate five times at Sri Lanka's hands.

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya claimed three wickets on the day, while Tharindu Ratnayake took one, as Sri Lanka bowled Bangladesh out for just 133 in 44.2 overs in their second innings, after the visitors had resumed the day on 115 for six in 38.4 overs. Bangladesh had earlier managed 247 all out in 79.3 overs in their first innings, in reply to Sri Lanka's 458 all out in 116.5 overs.

It took the hosts only 34 deliveries to wrap up the match on the final morning. Jayasuriya struck in just the fifth ball of the day, removing Bangladesh's last recognised batter, Litton Das. He tempted Litton into a forward drive, but the sharp turn found the edge and the wicketkeeper did the rest.

Litton could add only one run to his overnight score, departing for 14 off 43 balls.

Soon after, Bangladesh lost Nayeem Hasan (5 off 8), with Jayasuriya once again drawing the batter forward and Kusal Mendis completing the stumping.

Jayasuriya then sealed his 12th Test five-for by dismissing Taijul Islam (6 off 15), caught and bowled, before Tharindu trapped Ebadot Hossain (6 off 7) lbw to end the innings.

Jayasuriya finished with figures of five for 56 in 18 overs, while Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka was named player of the match for his superb 254-ball 158.
