Former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda was arrested during a drive conducted in Uttara in the capital last night (22 June), the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said today (23 June).

In a statement on DMP's official Facebook page, the DMP stated that Nurul Huda was arrested by Uttara West Police Station personnel around 8:25pm.

However, Md Mohidul Islam, deputy commissioner of DMP's Uttara division, told TBS yesterday that the former chief election commissioner was held by an agitated crowd and was swiftly taken into police custody for his safety.

A viral video circulating on social media also shows Nurul Huda being assaulted by a mob.

The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media and various groups.

Several rights organisations, including law and human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) and Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB), condemned the mob attack on Nurul Huda and demanded punishment for those involved in the incident.

Army reaffirms commitment to stand by the people, warns of strict action against mob violence

The interim government yesterday said legal action will be taken against the individuals who created a mob to detain former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.

The government also urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands.

The former CEC's detention came just hours after a case was filed by the BNP at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station last morning, accusing 24 people, including former chief election commissioners, election commissioners and other officials involved in conducting the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections, of irregularities and biased conduct.

When the mob rules

In previous incidents of mob violence, police were seen remaining inactive, despite arriving promptly at the scene.

Last month, the army pledged to take strict action against any activities that could result in loss of life, property damage, mob violence, or public suffering. While the warning initially offered a sense of relief, that reassurance was short-lived, as a mob attack on Nurul Huda took place within weeks.
