Madrasa education must embrace research, technology: IAU VC
Islamic Arabic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Abu Zafar Khan has called for madrasa education to become more research-oriented, technology-driven and skills-based to equip students for a greater role in national development.
He made the remarks at a seminar titled "Higher Education in Madrasas: Prospects and Challenges" at the Rajshahi District Shilpakala Academy auditorium on Friday, 17 July.
The Kamil Postgraduate Education, Training and Research Centre of the university organised the programme, which also featured prayers for those killed in the July movement.
Principals, vice-principals and governing body members from affiliated Fazil and Kamil madrasas in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Natore were present at the seminar.
He attended the seminar as the chief guest.
"Madrasa education is an important part of the country's higher education system. It must become more research-oriented, technology-driven and skills-based to meet contemporary needs," he said.
He noted that madrasa students could contribute more effectively to national development if institutions developed human resources equipped with modern knowledge and skills alongside religious and moral education.
Addressing principals, vice-principals and governing body members, the vice-chancellor called for self-assessment and critical reflection among all stakeholders to drive the overall development of madrasas.
He emphasised the need for regular in-house training to enhance teachers' professional skills and ensure effective classroom instruction.
The vice-chancellor also urged every madrasa to establish an alumni association, saying former students could play a vital role in institutional development.
He recommended the gradual introduction of Ibtedayi sections in madrasas to foster a student-friendly environment and increase enrolment.
Paying tribute to those killed in the July movement, he said, "The July martyrs set a unique example of sacrifice in the struggle to establish democracy, justice and people's rights."
"The new generation must uphold their ideals, patriotism and spirit of sacrifice and work for the welfare of the country and its people," he added.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Mohammad Shahidul Islam presented the keynote paper.
"Madrasa education has significant potential, but it also faces various challenges," he said.
"These challenges must be addressed by integrating modern education, research and technology to make madrasa education more responsive to contemporary needs and international standards," he said.
Kamil Postgraduate Education, Training and Research Centre Dean Professor Dr Md Idris Ali chaired the seminar.
Islamic Arabic University Treasurer Shahinul Islam, Planning and Development Office Director and Project Director Professor Md Nowsher Ali, and Acting Registrar Fahad Ahmad Momtazi also spoke as discussants.
Representatives of affiliated Fazil and Kamil madrasas shared their perspectives and recommendations on improving madrasa education and setting future priorities.
The programme concluded with special prayers, seeking forgiveness for the departed souls of those killed in the July movement, the speedy recovery of the injured, and peace, progress and prosperity for the country.
