Busbar malfunction caused sudden blackout in parts of Dhaka last night: Power Grid Bangladesh

A busbar malfunction in a power substation of Power Grid Bangladesh PLC in the Rampura area prompted a sudden blackout for more than three hours in parts of Dhaka city last night (23 June).

A busbar is a copper or aluminium strip that transfers electricity in a substation, electrical apparatus, or switchboards of the substation.

Power Grid Bangladesh PLC officials told The Business Standard today (23 June) that the Rampura substation is interconnected with the substation of Madertek, Moghbazar, Gulshan, Aftabnagar, and the Dhaka University area.

As those substations are scattered in Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (Desco) and Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) area, the impact of the substation malfunction was felt in Gulshan, Banani, Badda, Banasree Malibagh, Mouchak, Moghbazar, Badda, Hatirjheel, Karwan Bazar, Farmgate, Rajabazar, Indira Road, Green Road, Dhaka University, Dhanmondi as well as some other parts of the Dhaka city from 9.45pm last night.

Power returns to parts of Dhaka after 2-hour outage

"The malfunction in Rampura substation caused a chain reaction in other substations too," said Mohammed Faizul Kabir, chief engineer, transmission-1 (additional charge) of Power Grid Bangladesh PLC

When asked about the precautionary measures taken to prevent such incidents in the future, he said that this sort of malfunction in the substation is a rare occurrence and doesn't usually happen.

Restoration of power started from 11.05pm last night after Rampura substation tripped at 9.45pm, said a Power Grid Bangladesh PLC official.

It takes more than three hours to restore the electricity supply fully in the affected area, said officials of the Bangladesh Power Development Board.
