Mob justice unacceptable, says home affairs adviser regarding incident with ex-CEC

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has condemned the recent mob behaviour towards former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda, stating that mob justice is in no way acceptable.

Speaking to journalists this morning (23 June) after inspecting the Horticulture Centre in the Mouchak area of Gazipur's Kaliakair, the adviser said, "Mob justice is in no way acceptable. What happened to him (Nurul Huda), meaning that this and that was put around his neck, is in no way acceptable. If there is anything of this sort, you will inform us and hand it over to the law enforcement agencies. The law enforcement agencies will take proper action."

He added, "It was seen there that he (Nurul Huda) was being attacked right in front of the law enforcement agencies. An investigation committee will be formed for this. We will investigate who is involved. If anyone from the law enforcement agencies is involved in this, we will also take legal action against them."

Jahangir Alam, who also serves as the agricultural adviser, further said the government is working to protect the country's arable land.

"We are going to enact an agricultural land protection law. It is an 'Agricultural Protection' law so that agricultural land is not encroached upon. Many native fruits are disappearing from our country. So, you will make everyone aware so that everyone plants more native fruit trees."

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Gazipur District Police Superintendent Chowdhury Md Zaber Sadeque, Kaliakair Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Kausar Ahmed, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Centre Md Enamul Haque, Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Mannan, and Mouchak Police Outpost Inspector Md Abdus Selim were also present during the visit.

The adviser arrived at the Mouchak Horticulture Centre at 10:30am and inspected the facilities.

He later departed for Tangail, where he is scheduled to visit the Police Training Centre and attend a meeting with law enforcement officials and representatives of various departments at the District Commissioner's office.

Notably, former CEC KM Nurul Huda was held by an angry mob in the capital's Uttara area yesterday (22 June).

A video circulated on social media showed him surrounded by people with a garland of shoes around his neck. He was later taken into police custody for his safety.

Earlier that day, the BNP filed a case against the chief election commissioners and officials responsible for the 10th, 11th, and 12th parliamentary elections, accusing them of misconduct and inaction.

The 11th national election, held in December 2018, was conducted under Nurul Huda's leadership.
