Islami Andolan leader released after protest at Ctg police station

Police in Chattogram released a local leader of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, who was detained as an extortion suspect, after a group of party activists staged a protest outside Chandgaon Police Station today (20 June), demanding his immediate release.

Police later claimed that the man had been detained due to a misunderstanding.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aftab Uddin said, "We arrested four people last night in connection with an extortion case in the Kaptai Rastar Matha area. At the time, one of our sources claimed Habibur Rahman was also involved, and he was subsequently brought in by an officer."

"This morning, leaders of Islami Andolan came to the police station. I summoned the plaintiff and the witnesses. They all confirmed that Habibur Rahman was not one of the accused. We then released him from our custody," he added.

The OC also said, "It was a case of mistaken identity. The delay in releasing him was due to the late arrival of the plaintiff, which understandably caused some agitation among the protesters."

The detained leader, Habibur Rahman, serves as the Chandgaon thana unit secretary of Islami Andolan.

Upon learning of his detention, over a hundred party leaders and activists gathered in front of the police station around 10:30am today, staging a sit-in protest, chanting slogans and demanding Habibur's release.

The protest continued until Habibur was released around 12:30pm.

The situation returned to normal after the release, and party workers left the premises peacefully.
