Only 814 garment factories, out of 2,092, have paid Eid bonuses to their workers so far, even with just over a week left before the Eid-Ul-Adha.

According to the latest data released by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) yesterday (26 May), a large number of 61.09% or a total of 1,278 garment factories are yet to pay the Eid bonus.

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has recently warned that garment workers must be paid their Eid bonus by May and salary between 1-3 June.

The BGMEA is hopeful that its member factories will be able to meet the deadlines.

Talking to The Business Standard, government-appointed Administrator to BGMEA Md Anwar Hossain said, "We have a deadline to clear the bonus by 31 May. We hope that the bonus and salary will be cleared within the stipulated time. Bonus and salary paying ratio will pick up in the coming days."

Meanwhile, 30 garment factories are yet to pay the salaries for the month of April. Two factories Hong Kong Fashion Ltd and Hagh Knit Wear Ltd located in Gazipur - haven't even paid the March salaries. The two garments are and both are located in Gazipur.

Furthermore, Bashundhara Garments Ltd in Sarabo of Kashimpur and Shadhin Garments Ltd in the bypass area of Gazipur have been closed for months.

About the unpaid salaries, Md Anwar Hossain said, "Salaries remain unpaid mainly by TMZ and several other garments."
