A businessman was seriously injured in an armed robbery in broad daylight in Dhaka's Mirpur area today (27 May), when assailants shot him and made away with Tk22 lakh in cash.

The victim, Md Mahmudul Islam, 55, owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, was attacked on Abdul Baten Road near the Mirpur Stadium at around 10am, according to police.

He was first taken to a private hospital by locals and later transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Talking to reporters from his hospital bed, Mahmudul said he was on his way to the office from his residence in Mirpur 6 when six men on two motorcycles intercepted him between the stadium's swimming pool and the Fire Service and Civil Defence office.

"They demanded the money I was carrying. When I refused, they shot me and took away the Tk22 lakh," he recounted.

Mirpur Model police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Sajjad Rummon said, "Police reached the scene immediately after the incident. CCTV camera footage has been collected. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the culprits."

He also confirmed that Tk22 lakh was looted.
