BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the party's meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today (24 May) will primarily focus on holding a fair election, as this is the only way to restore democratic order in Bangladesh.

Speaking to journalists at a programme organised by the Dhaka Stock Exchange today, Amir Khasru said, "In the current context of Bangladesh, how [the country] will move forward, how we will quickly return to a democratic order, this is the main issue. This will be in our discussion."

He added, "This is the most important thing – for the people of Bangladesh, how quickly we return to a democratic order. And to advance that, we can go towards elections quickly. If we have to return to a democratic order, that is not possible without elections. Elections are a key issue, and I am sure we will discuss this."

When asked about the possible timing of the election, he said it could take place even before December.

Regarding the ongoing political situation, Khasru dismissed the notion of a national crisis. "What crisis? We are not seeing any crisis," he said.

Responding to queries about rumours of the chief adviser's resignation and other political challenges, he said, "These are not matters for discussion. The matter for discussion is how Bangladesh quickly moves towards democracy, regains democratic order, and through a fair election, has an elected government and parliament, who will be accountable to the people."

He continued, "That accountability is what the people of Bangladesh have been sacrificing for over the past 16 years. So, this is the main issue."

When asked whether the BNP hoped to leave today's meeting more satisfied than after their previous meeting with the chief adviser, he said, "It is not about our satisfaction; it is about the people of the country. Politics is for the satisfaction of the people. We do politics with the people, and we have to convey their words and fulfil their expectations."

"In fulfilling that expectation, what the nation wants is to elect a government by voting – a government that will be accountable to them," he said.

Both BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are scheduled to have separate meetings with the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus this evening.

BNP will meet with CA at 7:30pm. They will discuss the present situation and elections, confirmed BNP's media cell.
