Assault on lawyers during July Uprising: Appellate Division suspends bail of 61 pro-AL lawyers

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed the bail granted to 61 pro-Awami League lawyers by the High Court in a case involving the assault and attempted murder of fellow lawyers during last year's July Uprising.
The bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury passed the order today (19 May).
The court also instructed that the rule issued regarding their bail must be resolved within two weeks.
Lawyers MK Rahman and Motahar Hossain Saju represented the accused during the hearing, while Additional Attorney General Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan appeared for the state.
Previously, on 29 April, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division Judge Md Rezaul Haque had temporarily stayed the High Court's bail order until 5 May and referred the matter to the regular bench for a full hearing.
The High Court had originally granted bail to the 61 accused on 22 April in the case, which stems from allegations that they assaulted and attempted to kill lawyers who were participating in an "anti-government movement" demanding equality and justice.
