Eastern University celebrates international moot court achievements

Eastern University has recognised the outstanding achievements of its law students who represented Bangladesh at two of the most prestigious international moot court competitions: the 2025 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the 2024–25 Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition.

Held in Washington DC, the Jessup Moot—widely regarded as the "World Cup of Mooting"—celebrated its largest edition in history this year, with 805 universities from 104 countries participating. Eastern University secured its spot through the national rounds, finishing as runner-up among 44 institutions. One of its students was also named 'Best Mooter' in the preliminary rounds, earning the highest score among 88 participants.

In a separate milestone, a different team from Eastern became the only Bangladeshi university to qualify for the international rounds of the Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition, organised by the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights at the University of Oxford. Previously, only the University of Dhaka had reached this level from Bangladesh.

To celebrate these accomplishments, Eastern University hosted a reception on 16 May 2025 at Rezaul Haider Hall, which also featured the prize-giving ceremony for the university's 5th Intra-Department Moot Court Competition.

Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury, Hon'ble Judge of the High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, attended as chief guest, lauding mooting as a powerful tool in shaping legal professionals. He commended Eastern University for its consistent presence in renowned moots such as Jessup, Henry Dunant, Monroe E. Price, and Stetson.

Prof Md Shamsul Huda, Acting Vice-Chancellor, and Dr Khaled Hamid Chowdhury, senior advocate of the Appellate Division, attended as special guests, urging the university to continue upholding excellence in legal education. The ceremony was presided over by Prof ABM Imdadul Haque Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Law.

In this year's Jessup memorial (written submissions) ranking, Eastern University ranked 74th globally, outperforming institutions such as Oxford, Chicago, Toronto, NYU, and Glasgow, and finishing ahead of this year's runner-up, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

Mahir Chowdhury Abir and Sakib Khandaker shared their Jessup experiences, while Raisa Chowdhury and Riasat Azim recounted their participation in the Price Moot—reflecting on their journey, preparation, and the global exposure gained through these prestigious platforms.
