The Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has strongly condemned the killing of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of the Dhaka University's Institute of Education and Research.

Shammo, also the Literary and Publications secretary of the Sir A F Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal, was fatally stabbed by miscreants late last night (13 May), near Suhrawardy Udyan.

In a joint statement today (14 May), the Chhatra Shibir's central President Zahidul Islam and Secretary General Nurul Islam Saddam expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death and called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.

The leaders described the killing of a student by outsiders near campus as a grave threat to national security, stressing the urgent need to ensure a safe environment for students and restore security in the university surroundings.

They criticised the rising trend of crimes — such as mugging, drug abuse, and harassment — in areas like Suhrawardy Udyan, which borders the Dhaka University campus.

They further stated that university administration alone cannot tackle such security issues effectively. "Instead, a coordinated effort involving law enforcement, the university authorities, and the public is essential."

Referring to Shammo's murder as a stark warning of the country's deteriorating law and order, Shibir held both the government and administration accountable for allowing criminal safe havens to emerge near campuses.

The organisation urged authorities to identify and prosecute the culprits without delay and to enhance safety measures on and around university premises.

They also called for comprehensive security reforms in all educational institutions — installing CCTV cameras in crime-prone areas, eliminating drug and gang-related activity, and ensuring the visible presence of law enforcement at risky locations.
