The Dhaka University authorities have formed a seven-member committee to investigate the killing of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research and a Chhatra Dal leader.

The committee, headed by Arts Faculty Dean Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, has been instructed to submit its report within the next three working days, said a press release.

Other members of the committee include Professor Dr Mohammad Ikramul Haque, dean of the Faculty of Law; Professor Dr Taiyebur Rahman, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Professor Dr Md Sirajul Islam, provost of Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall; and Dr Md Abul Kalam Sarkar, Professor of the Department of Persian Language and Literature.

Assistant Proctor Sharmin Kabir will serve as the member secretary, while the deputy registrar (investigation) will act as the secretary to the committee.

Shahriar Alam Shammo died after being stabbed during an altercation following a motorcycle collision near Suhrawardy Udyan last night. He was declared dead on arrival at the DMCH.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Protesting Shammo's killing, a huge crowd gathered in front of the VC's residence inside the university campus this afternoon (14 May).

A faction of the protesters including Chhatra Dal demanded the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Khan and Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed for failure to provide security inside campus.

Leaders and activists of the central Chhatra Dal and Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal brought out a procession from the Raju Memorial Sculpture and staged a sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor's residence at the VC Chattar of Dhaka University.

Shammo, a student of the 2018–19 academic session of the Education and Research Institute of Dhaka University, also served as the Literary and Publication Secretary of Chhatra Dal's Sir AF Rahman Hall unit.

According to sources, around 11:45pm last night, Shammo was returning to campus from Suhrawardy Udyan on a motorcycle with his university friends Ashraful Alam Rafi and Md Abdullah Al Baizid. As they reached the northern side of the Kali Temple, a group of 10-12 unidentified individuals hit their motorcycle, causing them to fall.

An argument broke out between Shammo and his friends and the group of attackers. During the altercation, the unidentified assailants physically assaulted them, punching and beating them with bricks. At one point, one of the attackers stabbed Shammo repeatedly in the back of his right thigh with a sharp weapon.

As Shammo lay critically injured and bleeding on the ground, the assailants threatened him and his friends with various forms of intimidation before fleeing the scene.

Shammo was later rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
