Chatradal, Shibir clash at Alia Madrasah leaves several injured

A clash broke out between activists of Jatiotabadi Chatradal and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Government Madrasah-e-Alia in Old Dhaka today (4 August), leaving several people injured.

The clash started around 4pm in front of National Medical College inside the madrasa campus under Chawkbazar Police Station.

When contacted at 6:40pm, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the situation came under control around 6pm.

However, he could not say what had caused the clash.

Among the injured, two were identified as Sanaullah, 30, former senior joint convener of the madrasah unit Chatradal, and Nishar Uddin Rabbi, 27, member secretary of Lalbagh Thana Chatradal and joint general secretary of Dhaka South City Chatradal.

Confirming the matter, Md Faruk, inspector and in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said, "They are currently receiving treatment at the hospital."

According to eyewitnesses and hospital sources, Sanaullah and Rabbi were standing inside the campus and talking when a group of 30 to 40 Shibir activists allegedly attacked them with rods, sticks and bricks.

Both sustained bleeding injuries and were later rescued by other students and taken to the emergency department of DMCH around 4:30pm.

Student Sabbir Rahman, who took the injured activists to the hospital, said Sanaullah suffered injuries to different parts of his body, including both legs and his back, after being hit with rods and sticks.

He added that Rabbi sustained a serious injury to his left leg after being struck by a brick.

Local and campus sources said tensions had been prevailing between the two groups since morning over allegations of controlling hall seats and establishing dominance on campus. 

The afternoon clash reportedly followed the earlier tensions.
The situation remained tense on the campus after the incident, with additional police deployed to prevent any further trouble.
