Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said the Election Commission will make a decision on the Awami League's registration only after receiving the official gazette notification regarding the reported ban on the party.

"The gazette has not reached us yet. We will discuss and take a decision after receiving the official documents," the CEC told journalists today (12 May) following a meeting with representatives of the US-based Carter Center at the Election Commission office in Agargaon.

Nasir Uddin added, "Let the notification come. We are waiting for the gazette. Definitely, the Election Commission works for this country. We are equally concerned about this matter. When the sun rises in the sky, you will be able to see clearly."

Commenting on the meeting with the Carter Center, he said the organisation had not observed the last three elections but had shown interest this time.

"We have welcomed them and said that we will invite everyone who has experience. We encourage whoever works for fair and acceptable elections."

He further said, "The Carter Center has spoken with various political parties and stakeholders. They informed us that everyone has expressed their trust in this Election Commission. They wanted to know about our preparations for the upcoming elections. We have informed them about all the preparations we have made to fulfil our promise to hold fair and acceptable elections."

The Awami League, expected to be banned officially today, will lose its registration with the Election Commission as a parliamentary party under current electoral laws.

This would disqualify the party from contesting the next national election, as registration with the EC is mandatory to participate.

The interim government, amid growing demands for a ban on the party, held an emergency Advisory Council meeting on Saturday night (10 May) and decided to prohibit the Awami League under anti-terror laws. The official order is expected to be issued through a gazette notification.
