  • Before approval, land acquisition issues to be addressed

Acknowledging a lack of coordination between departments under the road transport and bridges ministry, Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Sheikh Moinuddin said weekly meetings will be held to address the issue.

"The departments concerned in the ministry are not coordinating properly with each other," he said at a views-exchange meeting with journalists at Sarak Bhaban today (7 May).

He said at the weekly meetings, the progress of new, ongoing and upcoming projects will be highlighted and problems, if there are any, will be resolved immediately.

Stakeholders from all relevant parties, together with senior officials from each department of the ministry, will be present at the meetings.

He further said a software will also be developed to provide regular updates of the weekly meetings.

The special assistant said the formation of a team to verify the project costs is currently underway. "The goal is to reduce unnecessary costs and bring transparency in project implementation."

Land acquisition is now a big challenge in project implementation, he said, adding, "Before approving any project in the future, land acquisition-related issues must be addressed."

Sheikh Moinuddin also reiterated that the much-awaited bus route rationalisation project will be launched very soon to restore order within the capital's transport system.

At present, piloting is underway with 35 buses on the Gabtoli-Naryanganj route. "The authorities are utilising the experiment to uncover problems and troubleshooting for a smooth start to the project."

He said a modern signaling system is currently being installed under a pilot project from High Court intersection to Farmgate to reduce traffic congestion. "Visible progress will be made within the next two months."

Regarding battery-powered auto-rickshaws, he said the local government ministry is working on formulating a new policy to control battery-run autorickshaws.

The event was attended by Bridges Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Chairman Md Yasin, Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority Executive Director Neelima Akhtar, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation Acting Chairman Anupam Saha, Reporters for Rail and Road President Anwar Hossain and General Secretary Tohidul Islam, among others.
