Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained 44 people, including eight pushed-in Bangladeshi nationals, from Roumari and Bhurungamari borders in Kurigram today (7 May).

BGB suspected that 36 of the detainees may be Rohingya and they are trying to confirm their identities.

Residents of several border villages in Roumari upazila and the Bhawalkuri area of Bhurungamari upazila found the group roaming suspiciously early this morning and handed them over to BGB.

At least 22 of them are suspected to be Rohingya. Police are trying to confirm their identity, the OC added.

Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbubul Haque, commanding officer (CO) of BGB 22 Battalion, said 14 Rohingyas, including eight women and children, were detained from Bhawalkuri border under Bhurungamari upazila.

Meanwhile, BGB Jamalpur office said among the detainees from Roumari, at least eight persons are Bangladeshi national.

Efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining 22, sources said.
