Indian media depicts Bangladesh Police members as Pakistan Army officers, Rumor Scanner finds

An Indian media has published a video report where a photo showing Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus handshaking with members of Bangladesh Police has been portrayed as Yunus interacting with Pakistan Army officers, fact-checking organisation Rumor Scanner has found.

According to Rumor Scanner, Indian media outlet Aaj Tak Bangla published a video report yesterday (3 May), where they said, "The individuals handshaking with Yunus are army officers. Looking at their uniform, it does not seem like they are Bangladeshi army officers."

"Are they army officers of another country? What are they doing in Bangladesh? Are they members of the Pakistan Army?" Rumor Scanner quoted Aaj Tak as saying.

During an investigation by Rumor Scanner, it was found that the individuals in the photo do not belong to the armies of either Bangladesh or Pakistan.

Rather, they are officers of different units of Bangladesh Police, Rumor Scanner said.

In an investigation, Rumor Scanner found the same photo on the Facebook page and website of Bangladesh's Industrial Police.

The photo was taken during the award-giving ceremony of "Bangladesh Police week 2025", said the fact-checking organisation.

During the police event, Additional Inspector General of Industrial Police Md Sibgat Ullah received award from CA Yunus.

The photo was also found on the Facebook page of Bangladesh Police, where even Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam was seen standing beside CA Yunus wearing the same uniform, Rumor Scanner added.

Additional Inspector General (Media) of Police Headquarters Enamul Haque Sagor told Rumor Scanner, "This is our ceremonial uniform, which is known as 'Summer Tunic'. We wear this uniform during ceremonies."

Displaying Bangladeshi police officers as members of the Pakistan army by an Indian media outlet is misleading, Rumor Scanner further said in their report.
