LPG strike will face strict legal action, warns Tuku
The Bangladesh LPG Traders Co-operative Association announced the two-day shutdown in protest against alleged harassment of traders and to demand higher commissions, among other issues.
Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmood Tuku has warned of strict legal action against anyone attempting to enforce a strike over liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), as traders plan to suspend cylinder sales and supply nationwide on 15 and 16 October.
"If anyone tries to enforce a strike over an essential commodity at a time like this, we will apply the law enacted in 1956. They cannot call strikes at will to push up prices. This will not be accepted," he told reporters after a meeting with LPG operators at the Secretariat today (14 October).
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir was also present at the meeting.

Tuku said the global energy sector was facing severe challenges due to the ongoing war, with fuel prices fluctuating sharply and supply sources becoming increasingly uncertain.
"At present, the United States is the only reliable source left, while other sources are uncertain. We are discussing ways to keep prices at a tolerable level for consumers," he said.
The minister urged traders to resolve their grievances through discussions rather than disrupt supplies, adding that the government would ensure consumers did not suffer.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir also warned against attempts to manipulate essential commodity markets, create artificial shortages or disrupt supply chains to press business demands.
He said the Essential Commodities Act, 1956, remained in force to regulate the supply and distribution of essential goods, adding that businesses must act responsibly.
"Business disputes over profits, losses, commissions or other commercial matters can be resolved through discussions. But using supply disruptions or artificial shortages to put ordinary people in hardship will not be tolerated," he said.
The government would take strict action against any attempt to destabilise markets or exploit consumers, he added.
Senior officials from the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), the Department of Explosives and leading LPG companies attended the meeting.
