A Jubo Dal activist named Shakil, 28, was shot dead by assailants in the Siyani union of Begumganj upazila in Noakhali last night (28 April). His younger brother Shubho, a leader of Chhatra Dal, was also injured after being shot during the attack.

The incident took place around 8:30pm at the Islamiya Market in the Gangabar Bazar area.

Locals caught three of the suspected attackers at the scene, beat them up, and handed them over to police.

The detainees have been identified as Morshed Alsh, 24, Jibon, 24, and Monir Hossain, 22, all from Dhibpur village in Alaiyapur union.

Begumganj Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Habibur Rahman said police rescued the suspects from the crowd and they are currently receiving treatment under custody at Noakhali General Hospital.

He added that a bullet casing was recovered from the scene, and preliminary findings suggest the attackers threw their firearm into a nearby pond. Police are working to retrieve the weapon by draining the water.

A case is being prepared by the victim's family, and operations are ongoing to arrest others involved, he said.

A CCTV footage of the incident has been circulating online.

Locals said around 8pm, Shakil, Shubho, and a few others were sitting at a tea stall near the Islamiya Market when several armed men arrived in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and attempted to forcibly abduct a youth named Labib. When Shakil and others tried to intervene, a scuffle broke out. During the altercation, the assailants shot Shakil and fired indiscriminately while fleeing, injuring Shubho.

Locals chased down and caught three of the attackers, beating them before handing them over to the police. Shakil and Shubho were rushed to Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors declared Shakil dead.

Manzurul Azim Sumon, president of the Noakhali district unit of Jubo Dal, said Shakil was an active Jubo Dal activist, and his brother Shubho is a ward-level Chhatra Dal leader. He strongly condemned the killing and demanded punishment for those responsible.

He claimed the attackers came from Dhibpur but could not confirm their political affiliation.
