HC bans Eid-ul-Adha cattle market beside canal in Banasree for 3 months

Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, the High Court has issued a three-month injunction against setting up a temporary cattle market on the vacant land beside the canal, east of Meradia Bazar in the Banasree area of Dhaka.
The bench of Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Ainun Nahar Siddiqa passed the order today (29 April) after hearing a writ petition filed by a local resident.
Advocates Liton Ahmed and Zahirul Islam represented the petitioner in court. After the hearing, Advocate Zahirul Islam explained that establishing a cattle market in a residential area is prohibited. Despite this, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) had issued a lease notification that included the site.

Earlier, on 21 April, the DSCC had issued the lease notification, where in the ninth column it specified the vacant land beside the canal, east of Meradia Bazar, as a cattle market site. Local resident Md Shahab Uddin Shikder yesterday (28 April) filed a writ petition challenging the validity of this specific clause through the writ petition.
Alongside the injunction, the court also issued a rule asking authorities to explain why setting up a cattle market at this site for Eid-ul-Azha 2025 should not be declared illegal and why the ninth column should not be removed from the notification.
Respondents to the rule include the secretary of the Local Government Division, the director general of the Department of Environment, the Dhaka District commissioner, the administrator, chief executive officer, and chief property officer of Dhaka South City Corporation, the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and the officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station.
