Complaint filed against notice declaring Barishal city councillors’ posts vacant
The complaint names several high-ranking government officials as defendants
Seventeen councillors of the Barishal City Corporation have filed a complaint challenging a government-issued notice that declared their positions vacant.
The complaint was filed on Thursday (18 April) in the Barishal 1st Joint District Judge's Court, naming several high-ranking officials as defendants.
The councillors argued that they were removed without prior notice or valid reason, in violation of their rights as elected representatives and thus undermining the local government system.

They requested the court to nullify the vacancy notification and reinstate them.
The court has taken the complaint into cognisance and set 7 May for passing an order on the matter.
"This administrative order declaring elected officials' positions vacant is unprecedented and a clear breach of the constitution," said plaintiffs' lawyer Mahbubul Haque.
"We firmly believe the court will deliver justice and reinstate the councillors," he added.
