Two women were injured early today (20 April) when a bottle filled with a flammable substance was hurled at a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the Aturar Depot area under Bayezid Police Station in Chattogram.

One of the victims has been referred to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition.

The injured are Laila Begum, 50, and Jharna Begum, 30, both residents of the Raozan municipality area in the port city.

Police have yet to confirm whether the incident was an act of sabotage or the result of a prior feud.

While officers at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital outpost said the attack was carried out with a "petrol bomb", Bayezid Police Station officers claimed it involved a "bottle of kerosene".

Nur-e-Alam Ashiq, in charge of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital  (CMCH) police outpost, said, "The CNG auto-rickshaw was coming to Chattogram city from Raozan. Around 4:55am, when it reached the Aturar Depot tannery warehouse area, three youths, their faces covered with black cloths, approached on a motorcycle and threw a petrol bomb at the auto-rickshaw before fleeing."

"Among the five passengers on board, three escaped unharmed, but two sustained burns," he said.

"Laila Begum suffered burns to about 90% of her body, while Jharna Begum sustained minor burns to her hand. Given the severity of her injuries, Laila Begum was referred to DMCH," he added.

Speaking to TBS, Bayezid Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman said, "The attackers, riding a motorcycle, had been following the CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the Hathazari area. They moved ahead of the auto-rickshaw in the Aturar Depot area and hurled a bottle of kerosene before fleeing."

"We are reviewing CCTV footage from around the scene to determine whether it was an act of sabotage, an attempted robbery, or a fallout of a previous conflict," he said.

In response to a question, Arifur said the passengers were travelling from Raozan to Kutubdia on the CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
