Two Rohingyas killed in Teknaf 'gunfight'

Two Rohingyas, who were allegedly involved in yaba trade, were killed in a "gunfight" with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday.

The deceased -- Mohammad Ferdous, 30, and Abdus Salam, 35, -- lived in Balukhali Rohingya Camp in Ukhia upazila of the district.

Lt Col Foysal Hasan Khan, commanding officer (CO) of the Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion, said three members of BGB were also injured in the incident.

He said 2.10 lakh yaba pills, a home-made LG gun, a round of fresh cartridge and a knife were recovered from the spot.

"A BGB patrol team of Nhilla's Leda Border Outpost (BOP) noticed some people entering Bangladesh from Myanmar in the mid night through Churikhal area. When the patrol team challenged them, they opened fire on them. Then the BGB men retaliated in self-defence. After the gunfight, they recovered two injured men from the spot. However, their cohorts managed to escape the scene," said Lt Col Foysal Hasan.

The injured were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, from where they were shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for better treatment, he further said.

Later, the duty doctor in the hospital declared them dead, he added.

BGB has filed a case with Teknaf Police Station in this regard.
