Court grants four-day remand for former ICT Prosecutor Tureen Afroz

A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for Barrister Tureen Afroz, the former prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal, in connection with an attempted murder case stemming from the July uprising in the capital's Uttara West Police Station.

Tureen Afroz was presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka yesterday, where the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Suman Mia of Uttara West Police Station, requested a ten-day remand for further investigation. 

Tureen, who appeared without legal representation, gave her statement to the court.

The prosecution, led by Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, argued in favour of the remand, stating that it was necessary for a comprehensive investigation. After considering both sides, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted the four-day remand.

Sub-Inspector Atikur Rahman Khan, a general registration officer at Uttara West Police Station, confirmed the court's decision.

Tureen's arrest on 7 April followed a raid at a residence in Uttara. The case centres on the shooting of Abdul Jobbar, a student, on 5 August 2024. Jobbar was shot in front of the BNS Center on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway during the final day of the anti-discrimination student movement and was treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. 

The case was filed on 27 March 2025, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with 50 others and 100-150 unnamed individuals. Tureen Afroz is listed as the 30th accused.

Afroz served as a prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal from 2013 to November 2019, handling war crimes trials related to the 1971 Liberation War.
