Three people were killed and at least 10 others injured in a road accident involving two buses and a drum truck in front of Barendra University in Rajshahi early today (7 April).

The deceased were identified as Mizanur Rahman, Nasim, and Jewel — residents of Ranihati union under Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila and reportedly affiliated with the local Jamaat-e-Islami unit.

The incident occurred around 12:30am on the Natore-Rajshahi bypass road in the Kharkhari area, police and fire service officials confirmed.

According to sources in the police and fire service, around 90 Jamaat leaders and activists from Chapainawabganj's Ranihati union were travelling in two buses on a study tour. Their destinations included Bagerhat's Sixty Dome Mosque, the Padma Bridge, and the graves of several deceased Jamaat leaders, including Allama Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.

The accident happened when the convoy reached the Barendra University area and collided with a drum truck coming from the opposite direction. One of the buses overturned and fell into a roadside ditch, while the other crashed into a roadside shop.

"Fire service members rescued at least 20 people and sent them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital," said Ariful Islam, leader of the Rajshahi University Fire Service unit.

"The cause of the collision between the drum truck and the two buses could not be determined immediately."

Among the injured, Nasim and Jewel died during treatment at the hospital in the early hours, while Mizanur Rahman succumbed to his injuries later in the morning.

Following the incident, local Jamaat leaders visited the injured at the hospital.

Chandrima police station Officer-in-Charge Matiar Rahman said, "An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Legal action is being taken in this regard."
