A man, identified as a security night guard at the Courtgaon Government Primary School in Munshiganj, was beaten up by a mob this morning (25 March), following allegations of attempting to rape a fourth-grade student on school grounds.

Upon learning of the incident, locals went to the school, confined the night guard Abul Hossain, 60, to a classroom, and beat him up.

Confirming the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Humayun Kabir said law enforcement rescued him from the mob and admitted him to Munshiganj General Hospital.

The agitated crowd surrounded the hospital in the afternoon. As doctors referred the injured to be taken to Dhaka, the mob attacked the vehicle the accused was in.  He was then taken inside the hospital for safety. Later, hospital authorities began evacuating other patients to a safe place for security reasons.

Munshiganj Police Superintendent Shamsul Alam Sarkar said the army and police were working to control the situation, and an executive magistrate was also deployed.

According to the victim's family, the alleged rape attempt of the 8-year-old child took place inside the school premises at around 10:30am yesterday (24 March) after a programme on the occasion of Independence Day.

The student's elder brother said, "My sister went to school on Monday morning to rehearse for a parade on the occasion of 26 March. At that time, there was an attempt to rape my sister. Then my sister came home and explained the incident."

At that time, the school's night guard Abul Hossain took the child into a room on the second floor of the school. After a while, he sent the child home after sensing the presence of teachers at the school.

The child fell ill after returning home and was given primary treatment at a local hospital that night.

Later, when the child told her family about the incident, the news spread and locals detained the accused on the school grounds this morning.

Earlier ASP Humayun Kabir told TBS, "If a written complaint is filed by the student's family in this incident, action will be taken subject to investigation."

Similarly, Police Superintendent Shamsul said, "The highest legal action will be taken according to the complaint of the victim's family."
