Deadline for company tax return submission extended to 30 April amid low response

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for companies to submit their income tax returns until 30 April 2025.

A notification was issued by the revenue collecting authorities today (12 March) in this regard.

The deadline was previously extended twice by the revenue authority, with the final extension setting it to 16 March.

However, due to a low response from taxpayers and requests from relevant stakeholders, the authority has decided to extend the deadline further.

Typically, the tax return submission deadline for company taxpayers was 15 January for the preceding income year (2024-25).

Last year, just over 30,000 companies submitted their tax returns. However, as of 10 March, the number stood at less than 20,000, according to NBR sources.

"As the response has been lower than expected, we had to extend the submission deadline further," a senior NBR official from the income tax wing told The Business Standard on condition of anonymity.

During a programme at NBR headquarters on 11 March, NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan expressed his dissatisfaction over the lack of response. 

Shahadat Hossain, former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB), told TBS, "People are currently busy with preparations ahead of Eid. Therefore, extending the deadline is a logical decision."
