Tarique elected Leader of BNP Parliamentary Party, set to take oath as PM later today
As the majority seat-holding party, the BNP formed the Parliamentary Party and held its first meeting, presided over by Tarique, after its 208 MPs took oath at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this morning.
The BNP Parliamentary Party has elected Tarique Rahman as its Leader, setting him up to take the oath as the prime minister of Bangladesh later today (17 February).
As the majority seat-holding party, the BNP formed the Parliamentary Party and held its first meeting, presided over by Tarique, after its 208 MPs took oath at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this morning.
At the meeting, the Parliamentary Party elected BNP Chairman Tarique as its Leader and the sole prime ministerial candidate, according to a post on BNP's Facebook page.
Talking to reporters after taking the oath, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also confirmed that Tarique, who has outlined new plans and a vision for a "new Bangladesh", has been chosen by the party's MPs to lead them in the Jatiya Sangsad.
The oath-taking of newly elected MPs of the 13th parliament followed a unique process due to the absence of the speaker and deputy speaker, as the 12th parliament was dissolved following the ouster of the Awami League government in August 2024.
In line with Article 148(2)(a) of the Constitution, as the speaker and deputy speaker were unable, the chief election commissioner stepped in to administer the oath to the new MPs within three days of the gazette notification.
As the BNP Parliamentary Party elected Tarique as its leader, he will now be formally invited by the president to form the government as the prime minister.
The president will receive the party's resolution, review the supporting majority, and administer the oath to the prime minister, after which the newly elected government will begin its official functions.
