A man has been detained in connection with assaulting a female police constable with an iron rod in Savar, Dhaka today (9 March).

The victim, Iti Khanom, a constable serving at Kaliakair Police Station in Gazipur, was taken to Savar Upazila Health Complex for treatment, police said.

Meanwhile, police have detained the accused, Md Sohel, also known as Babu, Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Jewel Rana told The Business Standard.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Iti Khanom said she was on her way to work in plain clothes on a rickshaw. Near the Thana Stand, the rickshaw almost hit a car coming from the opposite direction.

"The driver of the car became enraged and started yelling," she said.

"When I identified myself as a police officer and protested his behaviour, he got out of the vehicle with an iron rod and started beating me.

"The assault left severe injuries on both of my legs. As I screamed for help, bystanders rushed in, and he quickly fled in the car," she added.

After receiving medical treatment, she filed a complaint with Savar Police Station.

The police constable said the man is the driver of Ahsan Ullah, the organisational secretary of Savar Municipal BNP.

However, BNP leader Ahsan Ullah could not be reached for a comment on the matter.
