There is no room for the rapists in the country, Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said today (9 March).

"Those who will get involved in any violence against women or raping incident anywhere in the country, would be brought to book and ensured highest punishment," he told a media briefing on law and order at the law ministry conference room this afternoon.

He said those who were involved in the recent rape incident at Magura have already been arrested and would be ensured highest punishment through legal procedures.

"The government has declared 'zero tolerance' against rape," he added.

Among others, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam were present during the briefing.

"Our stand against rape and women repression is very clear," the home adviser said, adding, "I've already instructed the law enforcement agencies to take stern action against such offenders."

Instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to submit investigation report to the court by enlisting all incidents of rape and violence against women, Jahangir Alam said.

He added that those involved in the recent rape incidents would be arrested soon and brought to trial to face exemplary punishment.

The women, he said, will move freely in and outside their homes and anyone who tries to obstruct them will be brought to book immediately.

He also urged al to launch social movement against rape and women repression side by side with the legal procedures.

Jahangir Alam said the members of banned militant organisation Hizbut Tahrir brought out a procession at Baitul Mukarram Mosque area after the Jumma prayers last Friday.

"Police dispersed them and many of them were arrested from the area," he said, adding that no banned organsation would be allowed to perform any political activities in the country.

The government, the home adviser said, has already declared 'zero tolerance' policy in this regard.

Referring to a recent incident of assaulting a sub-inspector by some miscreants and drug peddlers at Potenga in Chattogram, the adviser said all the offenders have already arrested and the government will not bother any attack on the law and order forces.

The government, he said, has been relentlessly trying to maintain law and order during the holy month of Ramadan and already set up over 100 check posts in the capital in this regard.

The joint forces have been conducting special drives in the target areas to curb snatching incidents and extortion, he said, adding that necessary instructions have already given the law enforcement agencies to take immediate steps on the highways to ensure smooth journey of the home-bound people before and after Eid-ul-Fitr.
