The Bangladesh Civil Service (Health) Cadre Specialist Doctors Forum has announced a three-day strike from Saturday (8 March) demanding promotion.

Two-hour strike will be observed for three consecutive days from 10am to 12pm in government hospitals, the forum said in a press release on Friday.

However, emergency department services will be provided during the strike, it said.

Their demands also include the elimination of intra- and inter-cadre discrimination.

The doctors' forum threatened to go on an indefinite full-day strike from 11 March (Tuesday) if their demands are not met.

Several other organisations of specialist doctors have also announced a three-day strike from Saturday.

Dr Mirza Md Asaduzzaman, convener of BCS (Health) Cadre Specialist Doctors Forum, told The Business Standard that despite fulfilling all the conditions for promotion eligibility and repeatedly updating all the files in the ministry, promotions are being withheld year after year.

"More than 50% of the teaching posts are vacant in all medical colleges. We have 7,500 eligible candidates who have fulfilled all the qualifications and are waiting. But the health ministry has been delaying appointment for the last 4-5 years. Even after this government came to power, we have informed them several times but there has been no solution," he said.
