Ex-ICT secy Ziaul Alam arrested in Ctg over NID data leak case

Police in Chattogram arrested former senior secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), N M Ziaul Alam, in connection with a case regarding the leak and sale of National Identity (NID) data.
He was apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday (5 March) from the residence of a doctor in the Panchlaish area of Chattogram Medical College.
According to police, the doctor is the elder brother of Alam's wife, and Alam had been staying there recently.
Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Sulaiman confirmed the arrest and said, "Based on information from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), former senior secretary N M Ziaul Alam was arrested in the early hours on Wednesday."
He further added, "The case involving the leak and sale of NID data is currently under CID investigation. As a result, they transferred the accused to Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon for further legal proceedings."
On 8 October last year, a case was filed under the Cyber Security Act against 19 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's ICT advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy, over allegations of NID data breach and sale. Former ICT senior secretary N M Ziaul Alam was also named as one of the accused in that case.
