Police arrested top-listed fugitive criminal Arafat Mamun, who was wanted in multiple cases, including extortion, kidnapping, and murder, along with one of his associates from Raozan in Chattogram in the early hours of today (6 March).

Police also seized a foreign revolver, five rounds of bullets, a local firearm (LG), two cartridges, and a sharp weapon from his possession.

Additional Superintendent of Chattogram District Police Mohammad Russel confirmed the arrest in the morning.

He said, "The arrest follows the murder of dried fish trader Md Jahangir Alam, who was shot dead on 24 January in the Noapara area of Raozan while heading to Jummah prayers. His cousin, Md Abbas Uddin, was also injured in the attack. The victim was fatally wounded in the head and back by a shotgun blast, and doctors declared him dead upon arrival at the hospital.

"Following the incident, police collected CCTV footage and evidence from the crime scene. A case was filed based on a complaint by the victim's son, Maksud Alam, against 25–30 unidentified assailants."

He added, "Chattogram district police launched extensive operations to track down the perpetrators. Two suspects, Ramzan Ali and Gias Uddin, were previously arrested and sent to court. CCTV footage analysis led to further identification of those involved, prompting continuous police raids."

According to Mohammad Russel, around 2am today, Raozan police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan and his team received intelligence that Arafat Mamun was hiding at his uncle Mohammad Azam's house in Garib Ullah Para of East Guzra Union. When police surrounded the house, Mamun and his associate, Biplob Barua attempted to escape through the back door while brandishing their firearms and trying to fire at the officers. However, law enforcement managed to apprehend them along with their weapons.

He further stated, "Upon interrogation, the suspects admitted to possessing unlicensed firearms used for extortion, kidnappings, and intimidation. The seized items included a foreign revolver with five loaded bullets and a sharp weapon from Arafat Mamun, while Biplob Barua was found with a wooden-butt single-shot gun and two red cartridges."

Russel said that initial investigations confirmed their direct involvement in the murder of Jahangir Alam. Sub-Inspector Kawsar Hamid filed a case under the Arms Act at Raozan police station.

Police database checks revealed that Arafat Mamun was implicated in eight cases, including one under the Speedy Trial Act in Raozan, two assault cases, two cases of kidnapping and extortion, one murder case in Raozan, another murder case in Chawkbazar under Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), and a financial fraud case in Chandgaon under CMP.
