Chattogram City Corporation to develop 472 roads, ensure strict quality control

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has announced the development of 472 roads to improve the communication infrastructure of the port city, Mayor Shahadat Hossain said today.

The mayor made the announcement while laying the foundation stone for the construction of a connecting road from Rasulbagh Residential to Bakolia Access Road.

According to CCC, this 2,000-foot main road and an additional 200-foot outer lane will be built at a cost of approximately Tk1.5 crore.

The project, which also includes the development of Syed Shah Road in the Health Care Residential Area, is part of the Covid-19 Recovery Project, funded by the World Bank and implemented by CCC.

Highlighting the broader development initiative, Mayor Shahadat stated that work on some of the 472 roads has already begun, while others are at different stages of implementation.

He emphasised that the city corporation will ensure strict quality control in all projects.

"There will be no compromise with the quality of the roads. Roads built with taxpayers' money must be sustainable. No one will be spared if the work is substandard," he warned contractors.

He also assured them that they do not need to offer bribes or commissions, stressing that public funds must be used efficiently to ensure high-quality road construction.

Reaffirming his commitment to public development and transparency, the mayor said, "The development of Chattogram will continue, and there is no place for corruption."

With the rainy season approaching, Mayor Shahadat acknowledged the city's waterlogging issues, attributing them to ongoing development projects by the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA).

"There are some temporary inconveniences, but we are monitoring the situation to ensure quick drainage," he said.

He urged residents not to dispose of plastic and waste in roadside drains and called for greater public awareness to maintain cleanliness.

The mayor also instructed city authorities to conduct mosquito eradication activities twice daily, in the morning and at night, to control the mosquito menace.

"Strict action will be taken against sanitation workers if they neglect their duties," he warned.

Among those present at the event were CCC Executive Engineer Ashiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Engineer SM Ashfaq, Mayor's Private Assistant Maruful Haque Chowdhury, Ziaul Haque Zia, and other officials.
