A man was brutally hacked to death in broad daylight allegedly by his son-in-law at a cattle market in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram this afternoon (6 June).

The incident occurred around 5:00pm on the Kaptai road near the Godown cattle market. Bystanders detained the son-in-law and handed him over to police.

The deceased has been identified as Osman Gani, 52, a resident of Rajapara area in Ward-2 of Shilok Union under Rangunia upazila. The accused, Mohammad Hossain, 40, is a resident of Azla area in Ward-8 of Purba Sarafbhata, also under the same upazila.

Confirming the incident, Rangunia Police Station Sub-Inspector Suman Kabir Mridha said, "The accused has been arrested immediately after the incident. Preparations are underway to file a murder case."

"The motive behind the killing will be determined upon further investigation," he added.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Osman Gani had gone to the cattle market with three cows to sell ahead of Eid. He managed to sell two of them and was waiting to sell the third when suddenly his son-in-law, Mohammad Hossain, arrived at the market with a sharp weapon and attacked him repeatedly, killing him on the spot.

Panicked bystanders quickly reacted and managed to detain Hossain while he attempted to flee. He was later handed over to the police and army personnel present in the area.

Following the murder, the body of the victim remained on the road for over an hour and a half before being sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
