Dead fish worth over Tk25 lakh were found floating after 12 fish enclosures were poisoned in Bagerhat last night (25 February).

The incident occurred in Ranabhumi Mirer Danga area of Shatgambuj Union under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.

Fish farmers in the area said when they arrived at their enclosures this morning, they found dead fish floating.

Fish farms belonging to Alam Sardar, Halim Sheikh, Mohammad Ali, Ilias Fakir, Tayyab Ali Sheikh, Yusuf Ali Fakir, Mahira Begum, Subhash Ghosh, Rubel Fakir, Halim Fakir, and others in the area were targeted in this "deliberate act of sabotage".

Victim Mahira Begum shared her distress, stating, "Someone poisoned my fish farm during the night. When I arrived in the morning, I found the fish floating. My family survives from the income of this farm. I am devastated and want justice."

Local BNP leader and former UP member Sheikh Mohidul Islam condemned the act, saying, "Miscreants poisoned the fish farms during the night, devastating at least 12 enclosures. These families depended on the farm for their livelihood, and many have taken loans from banks and NGOs to support their work."

The victims have expressed their distress, stating that their livelihoods have been ruined by this act. They demand that the perpetrators be identified and punished.

Mahmud Ul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station, said legal action would be taken if a formal written complaint is filed after investigation.
