Former Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Saiful Islam has been admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after falling ill in prison. He is currently under observation in the hospital's Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

Confirming the matter, Chattogram Central Jail Superintendent Mohammad Masud Hasan Jewel said, "Saiful Islam, who is accused in the Chattogram University (CU) student Hridoy Taruya murder case filed with Chandgaon police station, became physically unwell in prison on Sunday. Following the court's directive, he was transferred to CMCH for treatment. Medical examinations revealed deterioration in his heart condition, prompting doctors to place him in the CCU for further observation. Doctors have also recommended an angiogram for him."

"Saiful Islam presented medical records in court indicating that he had undergone a heart stent procedure a week before his arrest. In response, the court directed authorities to ensure he receives proper medical care," he added.

Saiful was arrested in Dhaka on 12 February and later presented before a Chattogram court, where he was shown arrested in the CU student Hridoy Taruya murder case. The court also granted permission for police to interrogate him at the jail gate before he was sent to Chattogram prison. He was granted division facilities in prison.

According to case documents, Hridoy Taruya, a history student at CU, was an active participant in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Following orders from some of the accused, a violent attack, including gunfire, was carried out on the protesting students. Several attackers, armed with weapons, took part in the assault.

On 18 July last year, Hridoy was shot in the Chandgaon area of the city and was immediately hospitalised. He succumbed to his injuries on 23 July in Dhaka.

Following his death, Hridoy's friend Azizul Haque filed a case on 20 September with Chandgaon Police Station, accusing 206 identified individuals along with 400-500 unidentified people in connection with the attack and murder.

Saiful Islam had taken office as CMP's 32nd commissioner on 4 July last year.
