Former Awami League MP from Sirajganj-6 (Shahjadpur) constituency Chayan Islam has been arrested from a residence of his relative in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur, said police this morning (10 February).

Chayan's wife and an associate were also detained from the house and taken to the police station.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur police station Joynal Abedin Mondol said being tipped-off, they came to know that the former MP was hiding in the house in Tepir Bagan village.

Police arrested him from the house with the help of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and BNP activists around 12:30am today, he said.

The former lawmaker had been hiding in the house for around the past two months, the OC said, adding that they took his wife and an associate under their custody.

According to sources, Chayan was elected from Sirajganj-6 constituency with AL nomination in the 12th parliamentary election held in 2024.

Since the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024, he was hiding in a flat on the fourth floor of a six-storey house owned by one Khairul Islam Milon, sources said.

Around 11:30pm last night, police encircled the house receiving information from leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and later arrested him from the flat with the help of locals, the Movement members and BNP activists in the area.
