Dense fog disrupted flight operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka early today (3 February), forcing six passenger flights to divert to other airports due to poor visibility.

The disruption occurred between 3:30am and 4:50am, with three flights landing at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, while the other three landed at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet.

Flight operations gradually returned to normal after 10:30am, as the diverted flights began arriving back in Dhaka, according to Group Captain Mohammad Kamrul Islam, executive director of Shahjalal Airport.

"Due to dense fog, several flights were diverted and sent to Kolkata. At the same time, three were sent to Sylhet Osmani Airport. However, flight operations have returned to normal after 10:30am," he said.

Airport authorities stated that two Kuwait Airways flights from Kuwait City and a Salam Air flight from Muscat, Oman, were among those diverted to Kolkata before landing in Dhaka later in the morning.

In addition to the diversions, nine departing flights and seven arriving flights were delayed between midnight and 9am.

The affected flights included services operated by Biman Bangladesh Airlines from Dubai, Muscat, Rome, and Jeddah; Emirates Airlines from Dubai; Gulf Air from Bahrain; and US-Bangla Airlines from Dubai, Doha, Sharjah, Jeddah, and Singapore. A Druk Air flight from Paro was also among those impacted.
