A pregnant woman, injured in a shooting incident linked to a conflict between two rival groups in Munshiganj Sadar, gave birth to a son today (31 January).

Pinky Akhter, who was nine months pregnant, was shot in the upper thigh this morning when a group led by Shahin Bepari, brother of Zahirul Islam, also known as Kana Zahir, attacked the house of Raju Sarkar in Kalirchar village.

The attack followed a violent clash the previous night between groups led by Kana Zahir and Kibria Mizi on the Meghna River, which left two people dead.

According to locals, Shahin and his men opened fire after not finding Raju, who is an associate of Kibria. Pinky, Raju's sister, was injured in the gunfire and admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital.

Dr Shaibal Basak of Munshiganj General Hospital said that the bullet entered the right side of her upper thigh and exited from the other side. "She is currently out of danger," he added.

Later in the day, Pinky was taken to Nurjahan Clinic in the town's Sreepalli area, where doctors performed an emergency cesarean section as the baby inside her was not moving.

"She also had severe pain in her leg, so we decided to operate immediately," said Dr Runa Akhter Dola, a gynaecologist at the clinic.

Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Shamsul Alam Sarkar said additional police have been deployed in the area, and efforts are underway to arrest those involved.
