Marital dispute behind Munshiganj businessman murder, wife’s ex-husband held: Police
Police say the accused carried out the killing over a dispute stemming from his former wife's relationship with the businessman.
Police have claimed to have uncovered the mystery behind the killing of businessman Sohel Munshi in Munshiganj's Louhajang, and arrested his wife's former husband in connection with the murder.
The arrest was made by a joint team from the district Detective Branch (DB) and Louhajang Police Station, Superintendent of Police Menhajul Alam said at a press briefing today (23 June).
According to police, Sohel Munshi was hacked to death in the courtyard of his home in Kalurgaon village under Gaodia union of the upazila late on 18 June. His motorcycle was also set on fire during the incident.
Following the killing, the victim's mother, Sefali Begum, filed a murder case with Louhajang Police Station against unidentified individuals. A special team from the police station and the district DB launched an investigation.
Menhajul Alam said investigators later found alleged links between the murder and Deen Islam, the former husband of Sohel's wife, Nupur.
Based on the findings, police arrested Deen from Serajabad area of Jashlong union in Tongibari upazila earlier today, he said.
Quoting the accused's statement, the police superintendent said Deen and Nupur were previously married and had a child together. About one and a half years ago, however, Nupur allegedly left her husband and child and started living with Sohel Munshi without formally divorcing Deen.
Police said Deen had been harbouring resentment since then.
According to investigators, he travelled around 19 kilometres to Sohel's residence on the day of the incident. He allegedly set fire to Sohel's motorcycle at night and then attacked him with a sharp machete when he came out of the house to extinguish the flames.
Sohel died at the scene, police said.
The superintendent of police said investigators collected CCTV footage from a location about one kilometre from the crime scene, which allegedly showed the accused fleeing the area after the murder.
Police later confirmed the identity of the individual seen in the footage following the arrest.
Legal proceedings against the accused are underway, police said.
According to local police, Sohel and Nupur have a two-month-old son, while Deen and Nupur have a three-year-old son from their previous marriage.
