Fraud case: Evaly's Rassel, Shamima sentenced to 2 years in jail in absentia

A Dhaka court has sentenced Mohammad Rassel, managing director of e-commerce company Evaly, and his wife, chairman Shamima Nasrin, to two years in prison in absentia in a fraud case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra passed the verdict today (29 January), the plaintiff's lawyer Tausif Mahmud told reporters.

The accused were absconding at the time of the verdict. After the verdict, the court issued arrest warrants against them along with the sentence.

The court also fined the couple Tk10,000, in default of which, they will have to serve two more months in jail.

On 4 February 2024, plaintiff Toufiq Mahmud filed the case against Rassel and Shamima.

According to the case statement, on 20 March 2021, Taufiq ordered a Yamaha R15 bike from Evaly and paid Tk2.45 lakh. On 3 April of that year, he ordered two more R15 bikes and paid Tk5.9 lakh. However, Evaly failed to deliver the three bikes within 45 days.

Later, the plaintiff contacted Evaly's Dhanmondi office. The Evaly authorities issued two cheques but requested not to encash them since there was not enough money in the account. So he did not encash the cheques.

Toufiq kept urging Evaly to refund him Tk14.1 lakh. However, Evaly did not return any money to him even after he sent legal notices.
