A Dhaka court today (12 November) convicted and sentenced the managing director of e-commerce platform Evaly, Mohammad Rassel, and its chairperson, Shamima Nasrin, to five years in jail each in another case filed over fraud.
The court also fined them Tk10,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve an additional three months in jail.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain delivered the verdict in the absence of the accused and issued both arrest and conviction warrants against them.
According to the case documents, the accused lured customers with flashy advertisements and lucrative offers on various products through Evaly's official Facebook page.
Relying on such offers, the complainant, Sadiqur Raihan, ordered three motorcycles on 20 March 2021. The company failed to deliver the motorcycles within the stipulated time and later handed over two cheques from City Bank to the complainant. When Sadiqur attempted to encash the cheques on 12 April 2022, both were dishonoured.
Following the incident, he filed a case against Mohammad Rassel and Shamima Nasrin with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, on 26 November 2023.
Earlier, on 18 September 2025, another court sentenced the couple to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a similar case.
