Former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, convicted and sentenced to five years' imprisonment by the International Crimes Tribunal in a crimes against humanity case, has filed an appeal with the Appellate Division seeking his acquittal.
A Supreme Court source said today (22 December) that the appeal was filed on 17 December. Madhumalati Chowdhury Barua is the advocate on record for the petition.
On 17 November, Mamun was sentenced to five years in prison for crimes against humanity committed during last year's July Uprising. He had turned state witness after being named an accused and was pardoned from a death sentence.
The tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, also sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. The verdict included confiscation of their assets and compensation for victims' families and the injured.
The tribunal formally framed charges on 10 July and approved Mamun's request to testify as a prosecution witness.
