9 hurt in clash between student groups in Khulna

Two groups of coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement based in Khulna locked in a clash last night, leaving nine people injured.

Among them, three have been admitted to the hospital.

The incident took place at around 4pm on Thursday, confirmed Moniruzzaman Mithu, deputy commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police.

No one has filed a complaint at the police station, he said, adding, "If either party files a complaint, we will investigate the matter."

According to students, coordinators of the movement had been invited to a programme on National Social Service Day. Some individuals, who were not actively involved in the movement, accompanied the coordinators to the event. This led to a disagreement between the central co-coordinator, Sajedul Islam Bappy, a student of Khulna BL College, and Sakib Reza, coordinator from Government Majeed's Memorial City College.

Later, both groups arrived at Shib Bari Circle with their supporters, where another argument broke out. This eventually led to a physical altercation.

Among the injured, Diya, a coordinator from Government Pioneer Women's College, and Sadia, coordinator from Majeed's Memorial City College, were severely hurt and admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Co-coordinator Sajedul Islam Bappy said, "Suddenly, 10 to 12 people attacked me from behind on my bike. They also assaulted female students."

On the other hand, coordinator Sakib Reza said, "The issue is that Sajedul Islam Bappy has been allowing students who are not part of the movement to attend various occasions, excluding the students who are part of the movement. Today, we had an argument about this. Later, when I was at Shib Bari Circle, several of them came and started another argument, which escalated into an attack on us."
