Speakers at CAB event in Ctg call for social resistance against dishonest traders

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) held its Divisional Consumer Rights Conference in Chattogram today (7 December), urging social resistance to curb the growing exploitation of consumers by dishonest traders.

The event, chaired by CAB Vice President SM Nazer Hossain, gathered government officials, experts, and consumer rights advocates under one roof.

Speakers criticised traders for manipulating prices of essential goods like rice, pulses, sugar, and soybean oil, exploiting their influence over politics and media. Despite government measures, such as reduced import duties during Ramadan, price hikes continue to affect citizens.

Chief guest Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan, director general of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, emphasised the importance of public movements, citing past examples, and urged greater awareness to combat unscrupulous practices.

Md Ziauddin, divisional commissioner, highlighted the need for collective economic efforts and social movements to drive change.

District leaders called for more government support to enhance CAB's field operations.
